Tech Summit: Building a Thriving Ecosystem for Higher Education in Virginia Prisons

  • Richmond, Virginia (map)

Facilitated by the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy. Co-Hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University.

Virginia is at a pivotal moment in its commitment to reducing recidivism, strengthening its workforce and fostering resilient communities. Education in correctional facilities is a proven path to successful reentry, and in today’s digital world, integrating technology into these programs is essential. Yet, efforts remain fragmented, with educators, technology providers, and correctional facilities often working in silos. This full-day summit will unite leaders from the Virginia Department of Corrections, the tech industry, educational institutions, and civic organizations to build a sustainable, technology-enabled prison education ecosystem.

This full-day working summit aims to cultivate a holistic B2B and public-private partnership model that equips incarcerated learners with 21st-century skills for successful reentry while laying the groundwork for a robust, long-term technology and education infrastructure within Virginia’s correctional system.

Summit Objectives:

  • Foster a shared understanding of the current landscape, challenges, and opportunities for technology in education within the Virginia Department of Corrections and local jails.

  • Catalyze relationship-building and networking among technology companies, educational providers, correctional staff, and civic leaders.

  • Identify and prioritize key problem areas that can be addressed through innovative technological solutions.

  • Initiate the co-creation of actionable, collaborative projects and business-to-business frameworks.

  • Lay the groundwork for a long-term, coordinated ecosystem for technology in prison education in Virginia.
